The historic aircraft hangar at Whalers Bay on Deception Island was recently vandalized with graffiti, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from the conservation community.

The hangar, built in 1961, holds significant historical value as the site of the first powered flight in Antarctica. Organizations such as the International Association of Antarctica Expedition Cruise Operators (IAATO) and the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust have denounced the incident.

These groups emphasize the importance of preserving Antarctica's unique cultural and environmental heritage. Regarding prosecution, there is no publicly available information on specific actions being taken to hold the perpetrators accountable. However, it's worth noting that graffiti or any form of vandalism is strictly prohibited in Antarctica, and those responsible can face serious consequences, including fines and even imprisonment.

In a positive development, the damaged hangar has since been restored to its original condition, thanks to the efforts of Oceanwide Expeditions. This restoration work demonstrates the commitment of conservation groups and tour operators to protecting Antarctica's fragile environment and cultural heritage.
