Pioneering small-ship expedition cruise company Heritage Expeditions is taking its citizen science programme to the next level giving guests the opportunity to join legendary mammalogist, conservationist, author and scientist Professor Tim Flannery in his search for mysterious new mammals on its upcoming Indonesian Explorer voyage.
Professor Flannery, a regular special guest with Heritage Expeditions and famously described by Sir David Attenborough as being “in the league of the world’s all-time great explorers”, said he was excited by the opportunity for new discoveries while exploring some of the little-known and rarely visited Indonesian islands on the October expedition's itinerary.
"There is a real sense of adventure for guests joining us on this expedition, very little is known about some of the places we are going and the wildlife that lives there," he said.
"Part of my work on this voyage, with the assistance of fellow adventurers, is to gather more information on the wildlife residing there – this is real pioneering zoology," he enthused.
The New Zealand family-owned and operated cruise company's Commercial Director and Expedition Leader Aaron Russ said Professor Flannery and Heritage Expeditions have an impressive history of scientific discovery.
"When Tim joined our first Indonesian Explorer voyage in 2019 he and our guests discovered 11 new mammal species when we visited Kofiau Island, providing the first scientific records for this island ever."
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Tim back on board for this voyage of discovery," said Aaron.
In addition to searching for new mammals with Professor Flannery, guests on Heritage Expeditions 18-day Indonesian Explorer voyage from Bali, Indonesia to Madang, Papua New Guinea, will also have the opportunity to swim with the Whale Sharks in Kwatisore Bay, walk with Komodo Dragons, snorkel world famous Pink Beach, discover Jacques Cousteau’s “underwater nirvana” Wakatobi National Park, explore the turquoise waters and rainbow corals of Raja Ampat, observe incredible wildlife including several Bird-of-paradise, enjoy incredible cultural exchanges with remote tribes, visit World War II relics and more.
