Hurtigruten and Speedcast reach for the stars

One of the bugbears of the connected generation is the poor quality and expense of internet connections at sea. Sure, things are improving, but for most cruise ships, there is still a long way to go.

Norwegian expedition cruise line, Hurtigruten, has raised the bar to the sky - quite literally with the new partnership with their complete fleetwide implementation of SpaceX’s Starlink low earth orbit (LEO) broadband connectivity. This will make Hurtigruten Expeditions the first cruise line to introduce the high-speed, low-latency connectivity across its entire fleet.

“As a world leader in exploration travel, it’s only fitting that we bring the world’s most innovative technologies onboard our ships to further enhance the experience and day-to-day lives of our guests, crew, partners and the communities we visit,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

Speecast CEO, Joe Spytek says Starlink will have satellite coverage in polar regions by the end of 2022, in time for the Antarctic cruise season.
