Only a few places remain on Norway’s Orca Highway, an exciting 10-night single departure trip, which includes a week on board the small, 12-passenger expedition yacht, R/V Kinfish, in the company of Tashi Tenzing, raconteur, three-time Everest mountaineer and grandson of the first Sherpa to successfully reach that summit.
Beginning in Oslo on 27th November, guests will have the opportunity to explore the Norwegian capital and take a guided tour of the fascinating Fram Museum of Polar Exploration, before flying to Tromsø, Gateway to the Arctic, and boarding the former research and rescue ship, Kinfish.
The sturdy vessel, which is small enough to access narrow fjords and areas that larger ships cannot enter, gives passengers the feeling of exclusivity as they scout for pods of feeding orcas in the icy waters by day and look out for the spectacular dancing colours of the Northern Lights by night.
The voyage is packed with highlights each day, including a visit to the world’s most northerly whisky distillery; a night hike from one side of an island to the other using headlamps; exploring an abandoned NATO base; going to a berry factory where jams, syrups and Sami handicrafts are produced, and learning more about the indigenous culture and cuisine of Northern Norway.
In addition to guest guide, Tashi Tenzing, grandson of Tenzing Norgay, the first person to summit Everest with Edmund Hillary, the voyage is led by Nobel Peace Prize winners, John Rodsted and his wife, Mette Eliseussen, who have carried out over 800 combined expeditions to the polar regions.
John also brings 40 years in the photographic industry, much of it spent in the world’s trouble spots, while Mette, who is part Sami, has excellent local connections in Northern Norway, a wealth of experience travelling in some of the most remote corners of the globe and extensive knowledge of leading orca trips.
The price of USD10,990pp based on twin share, includes two nights’ B&B at the Radisson Blu Plaza in Oslo, museum entry and tour guides, return flights between Oslo and Tromsø, seven nights’ full board accommodation, plus house wine and beer with meals during the cruise, zodiac excursions, one night’s hotel stay at the Clarion Aurora in Tromsø and an afternoon on a Norwegian fishing vessel, which is now a floating spa, complete with sauna, steam room and plunge pool.
