Lindblad Expeditions Announces Basecamp Channel Islands

#expeditioncruising

5-Day Wildness & Wellness Getaways in Partnership with exhale Spa

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic has announced Basecamp Channel Islands, a wildness and wellness adventure in partnership with exhale Spa that will explore the seldom seen Channel Islands National Park. Part safari, part adult camp, the 5-day voyage will be set aboard the 62-guest National Geographic Sea Lion and will explore the alluring remoteness that has motivated people to protect these landscapes and surrounding ocean.

In keeping with Lindblad's wellbeing programming launched in December 2017 in Baja, the active adventure is designed to blend the best of exploration, transformation, and restoration in extraordinary, revitalizing places.   And with acres of trails to walk or hike, sea caves to explore by kayak or paddleboard, undersea realms to enter, and landscapes and bird colonies to observe, the Channel Islands National Park is a spirit-lifting place to be.

Miles of ocean separate it from the Southern California mainland, and half of the park sits underwater. So being able to get there effortlessly, to move freely around the Islands leisurely and in genuine comfort - and to explore the land and undersea - is what makes this Channel Islands cruise unique. Of the 2,000 species of plants and animals within the vast National Park, one hundred forty-five exist nowhere else in the world. Marine life ranges from microscopic plankton to the blue whale, and many naturalists call them the 'Galápagos' of North America.

Basecamp Channel Islands will depart from the Port of Los Angeles and explore East Anacapa Island, home to Anacapa Lighthouse, the last major light station to be built on the west coast in 1912. Explore Santa Cruz, the largest island in California, with more than 600 plant species, 140 birds, including large colonies of nesting seabirds, and 11 land mammal species, including pinnipeds – and more than 60 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. Visit Rosa Island with Torrey Pines, considered one of the world's rarest pines, and one of only two naturally occurring groves in the world; and San Miguel Island with over 30,000 pinnipeds and up to five different species. On Santa Catalina Island, guests may spot the elusive Santa Cruz Island Fox found only on Catalina, or the impressive sight of the island's largest, and definitely not endemic mammals—bison, with a free ranching afternoon to grab a bike and explore downtown Avalon, the island's only incorporated city.

Woven throughout the Basecamp Channel Islands adventure will be the transformative wellbeing experiences exhale is famous for. Guests can indulge in healthy activities led by an exhale fitness teacher, spa therapist or an exhale-trained Lindblad Wellness specialist including exhale Barre + Cardio, Beach Boot Camp, and Power Yoga classes on deck, as well as stand up paddleboard yoga, transformational mindfulness hikes, and assisted stretching. Neck and shoulder massages will be offered prior to evening cocktails, and Chill Yoga classes offered in the evening, alongside group guided meditation.

There are many trails covering the islands offering the opportunity for leisurely walking, birding, or working with your certified photo instructor to capture the natural beauty, or for a strenuous hike for a real workout.  Grab a kayak to explore the shoreline, participate in talks, wildlife sightings, drawing or plein-air painting, mindful silences, star-gazing, tide-pooling, foodie pleasures, cocktails, mocktails and more.

Guests will also benefit from exhale's nutritionally savvy snacks, juices, and menu options, and from Lindblad Expedition's longstanding commitment to locally and sustainably-caught seafood, locally-sourced produce—and food that rewards.

Rates begin at $2,490 per person based on double occupancy in a category one cabin for the 4-night voyages. Departures are October 17 & 24, 2018.

EYOS single cabin departures aboard luxury 'Legend'

#expeditioncruising .

EYOS Expeditions, the world’s leader in private superyacht expeditions, is marking its tenth anniversary by introducing yet another world’s first travel experience. Beginning in 2019, EYOS will offer a limited number of scheduled departures where travelers will be able to book an individual cabin rather than chartering a full yacht. The first of these experiences is a one-week Antarctic expedition onboard the 77m yacht Legend from January 6th to 13th.

“We are creating an experience that was, up until now, available only to private yacht Owners or those who chartered an entire yacht. We firmly believe the smaller the number of guests on an expedition, the better the experience, and with a private yacht-sized group, the experience will be intimate and bespoke. Guests can linger on shore with charismatic penguins, jump into a Zodiac at a moment’s notice when a pod of whales surface nearby or choose to head ashore later in the day after a morning massage. The experience will be theirs to define,” says CEO Ben Lyons.

EYOS pioneered fly in/ fly out superyacht expeditions to Antarctica, and guests on this expedition will enjoy the same convenience of flying over the notorious Drake Passage. With seven full days on the Peninsula, guests will have ample time to explore and experience the Antarctic while still limiting time away from home.

Owner Jan Verkerk of Legend says, “We look forward to working exclusively with EYOS to develop this new expedition experience. There is simply nothing like it on the market now, and the combination of this uniquely capable yacht and their experienced expedition guides is unsurpassed.”

Prices for the one-week departure in January begin at 25,000 Euros per person and include pre and post hotel nights in Punta Arenas, flights between Punta Arenas and Antarctica, and all drinks and activities onboard. Three EYOS guides will be onboard with expertise in photography and the natural history of Antarctica. Reservations will open on March 26th, but interested guests can be put on a wait list now by emailing legend@eyos.com

Later this year, EYOS will introduce other scheduled expeditions onboard superyachts in the South Pacific and the Maldives, as well as future polar expeditions on board Legend.

Former Fiji favourites to sail no more

#expeditioncruising .

Just back from an exploration of the Fiji Islands with Captain Cook Cruises and I was sad to learn that three of my favourite vessels from the islands will (most likely) never sail again - at least in a commercial capacity.

Former Mystique Princess of Blue Lagoon Cruises in happier days (RE)

Blue Lagoon Cruises have all but given up on poor Mystique Princess (IMO 9131395). She languishes sadly in the harbour at Lautoka, apparently stripped of all her fittings and waiting for ... who knows what.

The cute all-wooden Tui Tai (RE)

Recent cyclones, especially the devastating Winston took its toll on maritime operations in Fiji and one casualty was the delightful schooner, Tui Tai (IMO 7910644). I hear she's still afloat, but too badly damaged to resume commercial operations.

MV Reef Escape as I saw her in 2008 (RE)

Captain Cook Cruises' Reef Escape (IMO 8512475) was sold to the 'colourful' resort owner, Albert Bertini, for use at his on-again, off-again project, Vautele Island. Last I heard it was beached there after a storm blew it on shore.

Haumana Cruises back in business in Tahiti

#expeditioncruising .

Pleased to learn that Haumana Cruises are back in operation after a hiatus of a couple years.

The one-vessel company Haumana ran cruises in Tahiti until 2011 when it closed, citing a 30 per cent decline in visitors to the country linked to the global recession.

Haumana (which means "Spirit of Peace") Cruises relaunched in June 2017. The revitalized vessel offers 12 cabins, including one suite, with a maximum capacity of 27 passengers. Experiences include a three-day, three-night cruise to Bora Bora, Tahaa and Raiatea, with the main focus on experiencing Polynesian traditions, local crafts and visits to vanilla plantations.

Fine food is served on board, paired with a selection of wines. Additional dining options include a private beach meal, a Polynesian dinner-show ashore and a waterside breakfast. Haumana will also have a panoramic lounge and oversized outdoor deck, a platform for nautical activities, and a sundeck.

One Ocean Expeditions Expands Canadian and Arctic 2019 Voyages

Over the past year, expedition cruise operator, One Ocean Expeditions (OOE), has expanded its fleet, housing three vessels exclusively under its banner, to become one of the world's leading small-ship cruise operators. Following the launch of their brand-new programme in Central America and the Islands of the North Atlantic, OOE has now announced the release of their spectacular summer 2019 Canada's East Coast, Canadian Arctic & Greenland and Spitsbergen voyages.

Summer 2019 will see OOE's new vessel, RCGS Resolute, embark on its inaugural northern voyages, taking guests to Canada's East Coast and the Canadian Arctic & Greenland in style. The superior level of comfort and capability offered by RCGS Resolute means that guests will not only experience the highest standard of on board programming and expedition style cruising that OOE is best known for, but they can do so whilst enjoying exceedingly comfortable cabins on a vessel purpose built for passenger travel.

Beginning in July 2019 in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, RCGS Resolute will carry guests through Canada's magnificent East Coast on OOE's popular Fins & Fiddles voyages, to explore the colourful fishing ports, lively music, rich history and incredible wildlife of this spectacular region. Whilst on board, guests will have the opportunity to zodiac cruise, sea kayak, SUP, hike and cycle, whilst experiencing OOE's 1:4 staff-to-guest ratio and unparalleled personalised attention.

RCGS Resolute will continue north during August and September 2019 to offer some of OOE's most iconic itineraries including Labrador and Torngat Mountains National Park, followed by Canadian Arctic voyages to Baffin Island, Greenland and through the Northwest Passage to Cambridge Bay. With stability and style, RCGS Resolute offers guests the chance to experience the magic of these regions, along with unsurpassed access to its rugged coastline throughout these 10 and 12-night voyages.

Brand new for 2019, OOE is proud to announce the South Baffin Explorer – Art, Wildlife and Culture voyage. Sailing from Iqaluit on the 30 July 2019, this 10-night expedition not only offers the chance to explore the spectacular land and seascapes of the Canadian Arctic and encounter the outstanding bird and marine life of the region, it also takes the time to visit many of the indigenous art galleries which showcase the talents of these remote peoples, whose rich output is a major focus of this highly unique and engaging voyage.

Akademik Ioffe will join RCGS Resolute in Canada for early season voyages through the East Coast on the much-loved Fins & Fiddles and Labrador & Torngat Explorer voyages. Following this, the Akademik Ioffe will head north to the Canadian Arctic where passengers experience the vastness of this remote region on some of OOE's most popular voyages: Baffin Island – Jewel of the Arctic and High Arctic Explorer. Moving into August, adventures of early explorers are brought to life on board historically significant expeditions such as Pathways to Franklin and the Classic Northwest Passage.

Akademik Sergey Vavilov will spend the summer of 2019 operating in Spitsbergen, where four voyages will travel the west and northern coastlines of this wild archipelago. Through June and July, the ever-popular 9-night Spitsbergen Encounter voyages, one of which includes a Photography Symposium, will provide passengers with bird and wildlife encounters, as well as fascinating lessons in glaciology. Guests eager to experience even more of the breath-taking wilderness of Spitsbergen's mysterious islands can enjoy a choice of two in-depth 11-night expeditions which voyage deep inside the Arctic Circle.
