Hurtigruten unveils Explorer Voyages Brochure for 2014-15 - offering new and tantalizing experiences

No trend is more apparent in travel these days than experiential travel - the desire of guests to experience more local and unique interactions and take home knowledge and a greater understanding of where they have been.  Hurtigruten, a leader in exploration voyages to remote regions, makes this a primary mission of each of its unique Explorer itineraries.  Whether it is meeting with local Inuit in Greenland; enjoying the genuine Russian atmosphere of Spitsbergen's historic Barentsburg settlement; camping overnight with expert guides on the frozen expanse of Antarctica; viewing the rich birding sites along Iceland's diverse coast; or exploring numerous UNESCO sites along the islands of Southern Europe with lectures on the cultures and history.

Hurtigruten's new 2014/2015 Explorer Voyages brochure details these amazing places and experiences within its 92 pages and is available both in download form and by mail at www.hurtigruten.us.  Equally impressive are the many pages filled with images taken by Hurtigruten's past guests – stellar shots that are sure to entice.

Just as important as the focus on the experience, is Hurtigruten's focus on safety and safeguarding these remote destinations seriously giving the company a true leadership position in the world of sustainable travel.  Hurtigruten belongs to numerous environmental organizations including AECO, IAATO and Clean Up Svalbard, all of which demand that members maintain responsible travel safeguards for future generations.

A series of new excursions bring guests closer to the local feel and flavor of the remote regions visited by Hurtigruten's fleet of 12 ships.
  • Guests on Hurtigruten's Antarctica, Spitsbergen, Falkland Islands and Greenland voyages now have the opportunity to pitch tents and camp overnight on these remote frozen landscapes.  Using top-of-the-line equipment and developed in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute, this once-in-a-lifetime experience includes small walks, expert guides and true bragging rights.  For those preferring to remain on board, Hurtigruten offers a sunbed and sleeping bag to enjoy a night out on deck, watching icebergs in the night's soft light and enjoying hot chocolate.
  • Fish with the officers and crew of the MS Fram while in Greenland.  Guests can choose to spend about three hours fishing for dinner as at least one officer and some members of the crew make their way out in a small fishing boat to favored fishing sites.  All equipment is supplied and the chef is happy to prepare your catch for dinner.
  • Kayaking between the icebergs and ice floes of Antarctica's waters offers guests a true sense of the tranquility of such a remote region of the world.  No sounds except the occasional splash of the oar or the cracking of nearby ice reaches the kayaker.  Looking at the White Continent from water level provides a unique experience to be shared with friends for years to come.  The sea kayaks, dry suits, snacks and lunch as well as expert guides are all included.
Six Greenland itineraries, three in Spitsbergen (along with four land-based options), five in Antarctica, one in Iceland and seven in Europe (including two transatlantic crossings) show off the variety of Hurtigruten Explorer product.  Highlights include:
  • The Vikings ruled the waters of the North Atlantic and Hurtigruten takes guests to many of their ancient landmarks, from Scotland's Edinburgh and Aberdeen to Iceland's Westman Islands.  Highlights include Edinburgh's medieval Old Town (a UNESCO site); PolarCirkel boat landings on the Isle of Skye; the islands of the Inner Hebrides; the original Viking settlement of Stornoway; the small 10th-century capital city of Tórshavn; and the 15 spectacular islands of Iceland's The Vestmannaeyjar.  The 13-day sailing of The Viking Route departs May 13, 2014.
  • Disko Bay & The Southern Fjords is an in-depth exploration of the epicenter of the world's climate change conversation – Greenland.  Guests on the 13-day adventure learn from experts about the world's largest island, its people and culture.  Experiences include visiting traditional Inuit settlements such as Qeqertarsuaq and Qassiarsuk, watching jewelry and art craftsman at work in Susumiut, and hiking to the abandoned settlement of Sermermiut.  Departs May 5, 2014.
  • Celebrate a traditional Christmas with white scenery and little fellas in tuxes to greet you when coming ashore in Antarctica.  Hurtigruten explores the White Continent with years of experience and experts to guide the guests.  The 17-day Christmas Expedition makes numerous landings in Antarctica and spends time in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Orkneys as well.
Proudly transporting both freight and passengers for 120 years, Hurtigruten is a world leader in expedition voyages, sailing to such remote destinations as Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic's Spitsbergen, as well as year round along Norway's coast and Europe in the spring and fall. The company's fleet of 12 intimate ships, which each carry 100 to 646 guests, allows travelers to enjoy the scenery and culture of the destination in a relaxed atmosphere. National Geographic Magazine features wildlife images from Far East Russia

(c) Sergey Gorshkov
Spending months at a time in remote Far East Russia, award-winning photographer Sergey Gorshkov captures the raw beauty of the region's wildlife - often waiting for hours in extreme conditions for the moment to press the shutter.

Wrangel Island is the setting of some of Sergey's most spectacular photos. Tucked into the far reaches of Far East Russia, above the Arctic Circle, the Island is a haven for some of the world's most incredible wildlife. National Geographic Magazine is showcasing his work from Wrangel Island over 22 pages in their May 2013 issue featuring arctic foxes, muskoxen, walrus, polar bears, amongst other species. Sergey travels with Heritage Expeditions to Wrangel Island and often spends long stretches of time living on the island observing and capturing the images he is renowned for. Wrangel Island is one of the highlights on the Across the Top of the World voyage.

Click here to see Sergey Gorshkov's Wrangel Island images on the National Geographic website.

Kamchatka in Far East Russia is rated by Sergey as the ultimate location for photography and wildlife. Visiting this region early in his photography career he was captivated by the Kamchatka Brown Bears that inhabit the Peninsula. Other wildlife such as mighty Steller's Sea Eagles and hardy Arctic Foxes also feature in his work. It was this experience that motivated him to begin to capture the beauty of the landscape, flora and fauna for others to see - this is the heart of his passion.

Only recently open to outside visitors this area of the world remains one of the last frontiers for true expedition travel. Heritage Expeditions is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable companies in the region and leads voyages into Kamchatka and other Far East Russia destinations, providing access for passengers into remote locations where wildlife flourishes and photography opportunities are plentiful. Every voyage on offer is unique and showcases adventure travel at its very best.

Aurora Expeditions Freezes the Aussie Dollar

Expedition cruise company, Aurora Expeditions, has put a freeze on exchange rates for all of their upcoming voyages to Antarctica this 2013/14 season. Those that book their Antarctic cruise before 14 June 2013, Aurora Expeditions will lock in an exchange rate of AUD1:USD1 across all departures.

With the Australian-dollar reaching an 11-month low last week, some experts are forecasting a further strong downward movement in the coming weeks. Aurora Expeditions are encouraging passengers to book their US dollar cruises now to avoid increased costs.

As a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most travellers, a trip to Antarctica is considered a high-end holiday. Those looking to fulfil their Antarctic dream can rest easy knowing that the retreating Australian dollar will not increase the cost of their trip of a lifetime.

Travellers will have the option to book on a range of expeditions highlighting the Antarctic Peninsula, the Weddell Sea, the Antarctic Circle, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Itineraries also include 'Fly & Sail' options, excluding one sea crossing and allowing more time for landings and exploration in Antarctica.

Chimu Adventures celebrates Shackleton centenary with exclusive cruise to Antarctica

Clipper Adventurer, now renamed Sea Adventurer
(www.shippingdatabase.com)

Leading Antarctica specialists Chimu Adventures is offering the chance for budding adventurers to retrace the steps of one of history's greatest explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton.

In 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton led an expedition to cross the continent of Antarctica from sea to sea. Unfortunately, en-route to the continent his ship, Endurance, became frozen in an ice floe stranding Shackleton and his crew.

What followed was one of history's greatest survival stories, which saw Shackleton and his men cross the world's roughest seas in open life boats and traverse the most inhospitable of terrains. Incredibly not one crew member was lost, many owing their lives to Shackleton's leadership and survival instinct.

To celebrate the epic journey, Chimu Adventures has launched an exclusive Antarctica cruise on-board the Sea Adventurer, departing Ushuaia in southern Argentina on the 24 February 2014.

The 16-day cruise will retrace the path of Shackleton's expedition visiting the island of South Georgia, Shackleton's final resting place, the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. The ship's zodiacs will also attempt a landing on the famous Elephant Island, the starting point of Shackleton's 800 nautical mile journey in an open life boat to South Georgia.

On-board the Sea Adventurer, passengers  will be entertained by a few special guests - Australian TV presenter and Golden Logie nominee Andrew Denton and award winning artists Wendy Sharpe and Bernard Ollis.

Commenting on the upcoming voyage Andrew Denton said: "I am a self-professed Antarctica enthusiast. So far I have visited the white continent four times, and I can't wait to go again. Antarctica is a true wilderness: beautiful, hostile, fragile. I'm always amazed at how many colours there are in the white."

Artist Wendy Sharpe said: "Seeing Antarctic was without doubt one the most incredible experience I have ever had. The colours of the ice, sea and sky are unimaginable. I can't wait to go back, especially as on this trip we will see more penguins and seals. Every photo I have seen is astonishing and I'm very much looking forward to painting it."

Artist Bernard Ollis said: "Antarctica still feels like the final frontier for an artist. The amount of paintings or drawings actually made there can still be counted by hand. I feel this voyage will be powerful on many levels and challenge my pre-conceived perceptions. I am looking forward to producing an exciting body of new work."

Funds raised by the cruise will be donated to the Mawson's Huts Foundation, which helps conserve the historic huts used by Australian Explorer Douglas Mawson in Cape Denison.

Jewels of Halong Bay Recounts High-Adventure in Colonial Vietnam

Nearly 10 years after its launch as one of Southeast Asia’s most transporting cruises, Emeraude Classic Cruises has produced a 112-page narrative history that details the remarkable adventure of a colonial French family, an historic paddle steamship and its contemporary namesake.

The book - The Jewels of Halong Bay: A Tale of Adventure in French Indochina and a Curious History of the Emeraude — recounts the story of three French brothers who sought and made a fortune in colonial Indochina.

Its pictures include vintage shots of life and landscapes in the former French possession, maps, and images of the original Emeraude, which cruised Halong Bay from 1906 to 1937. The story concludes with the resurrection and relaunch of the Emeraude in December 2003.

“This story has captivated me since I first saw a postcard of the old Emeraude in the St. Ouen flea market in Paris in 1999,” said Eric Merlin, who built the latter-day vessel and whose research informs The Jewels of Halong Bay.

“The story gripped me then, and it’s never let go. Because we’ve heard the same thing from so many passengers, this book became inevitable.”

At its core, the book tells the story of the Roque Brothers, who set sail from Bordeaux in early 1858 and whose entrepreneurial skills and daring fueled their fortune. The Roques provisioned the French military during its campaign to establish a foothold in Vietnam. They built businesses in timber and sugar, and finally hit their stride with the development of a shipping company in the 1870s.

At the same Jewels tells the Roques’ story, it’s also telling the story of France’s deepening involvement in Vietnam, from its beachhead in Tourane (Danang) in the 1860s, through the rise of Saigon in the 1870s, and its move to Hanoi in the 1880s.

The Roques expand into greater Vietnam as France does, eventually bequeathing the foundation of their business to the next generation’s Paul Roque. It is Paul Roque who builds the first Emeraude, and three sister ships all named for gems — the jewels of Halong Bay — and who eventually brings his family’s time in Vietnam to a close in the 1920s.

Published by Nha Xuat Ban Lao Dong, with production by Duong Huynh Advertising, The Jewels of Halong Bay is available for sale at $15 at Emeraude Classic Cruise Sales Office and the Press Club in Hanoi, at the Emeraude Cafe on Halong Bay, on the Emeraude itself and at La Residence Hotel & Spa in Hue.

The story is based on research by Eric Merlin, and the text was prepared by Pam Scott, a longtime Hanoi resident. www.balconymediagroup.com

Top Eight Luxury Small Ship Cruises

What constitutes luxury when it comes to small ship cruising?

The active travel company securing matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small expedition ships, AdventureSmith Explorations, says luxury can mean accommodation, service and dining as well as the flexibility to shape an itinerary into a customized experience.

When catering to more upmarket clientele, AdventureSmith Explorations (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) director and founder Todd Smith begins with a handpicked selection of eight of his company’s small ship cruises that fall into the luxury category. Indicative of the service his company provides, Smith goes behind the scene to offer these insider’s tips on the best cabins or suite accommodations on each vessel to maximize one’s time and enjoyment on the water:

An Alaska cruise, Discoverers Glacier Country aboard the 22-guest Safari Quest, offers upscale intimacy and gourmet dining along with the flexible itinerary of a private yacht charter. Insider’s Tip - The Captain Staterooms A1-A4 have a floor to ceiling sliding glass door opening to a small balcony (rare aboard small ships and yachts).  Smith says to book early and choose A4 or A2 for the quietest cabins on board.

Costa Rica, Panama Canal & Colombia aboard the 72-guest Variety Voyager resembles a millionaire’s mega yacht. Insiders Tip - While the Owners Suite and P Category suites are obvious choices for travelers seeking the finest cabins, the B Category cabins, especially on the Riviera Deck, offer a very nice cabin with view windows at a considerable value.  Advice is to book early to secure one of two Riviera Deck B cabins that are located away from the forward stairways.

An Amazon River Cruise aboard the 24-guest Aqua means enjoying the highest standards of modern-day luxury cruising on the Amazon. “Oversized suites are the largest I have ever experienced aboard a ship of this capacity, with a sitting area, king beds and a full walk in bathroom with shower.  Executive Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, one of Lima’s culinary stars, has created a menu that draws on both Peruvian and European influence,” says Smith. Insider’s Tip - Master Suites on the Main Deck are larger and can be adjoined which is a perfect option for families.  Because they are raised from the water level, suites on the Second Deck offer more expansive views into the surrounding rain forest.

A Galapagos Cruise aboard the 16-guest Athala II offers spaciousness, stability and speed. A crew of 10 plus a bilingual naturalist guide offers a very high crew to guest ratio. Insider’s Tip – The main deck cabins are the obvious choice for luxury travelers because they are larger and they have balconies.  The cabins on the Upper Deck are smaller but they still offer a small sitting area, they open directly to the observation deck, they are very quiet and they can interconnect which makes them a great choice for families with kids.

In Antarctica The White Continent is a cruise aboard the 148-guest National Geographic Explorer. “Luxury in Antarctica must be balanced with access; among ships with ice-strengthened hulls that offer daily shore excursions in Antarctica, the National Geographic Explorer is the finest,” says Smith. A partnership with National Geographic means traveling with the most experienced ice team available, including authors, professors, researchers and photographers. Insider’s Tip – Only a handful of cabins aboard the National Geographic Explorer can be considered luxurious and they sell out early, sometimes up to a year in advance.  Focus on Categories 5, 6, and 7 as these cabins offer balconies or verandas and all are located on the Upper Deck.

In Asia Sailing the Mekong River: Cambodia, Vietnam, Angkor, Saigon is aboard the 48-guest Jahan that offers a step back in time into a distinctive British-Indian colonial themed boutique hotel.  Built in 2011 and specifically designed for Mekong River Cruises, she is, says Smith, “without question the finest ship on the river.”  Meals aboard Jahan are part of the exploration and offer a window in to the region with fresh, local ingredients highlighting outstanding Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisines.  Insider’s Tip – Limited departures mean this cruise sells out quickly.  The two Suites and two Category 3 Cabins sell out first because they are the largest at a whopping 376 and 549 square feet respectively.

Australia’s Kimberly Expedition aboard the 100-guest Orion is, says Smith, “more mega-yacht than cruise ship. No expense has been spared.” Insider’s Tip – Luxury travelers will want to focus on the Owners Suites or the Balcony Suites on Deck 5.  These cabins are the most spacious on board with a sitting area and floor to ceiling sliding glass doors that open onto a private French balcony (except Owners Suite 509 which does not have a balcony and is located near the stairway).

Sailing the Greek Isles aboard the 58-guest Sea Cloud combines tall-ship sailing with a highly appealing destination. Built in 1931 by E.F. Hutton for his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, the Sea Cloud is a vessel of incomparable grace that harks back to the golden age of ship travel. Insider’s Tip – The Owner’s Suites (Category A) and Original Deluxe Cabins (Category B) feature Carrara marble, golden bath fixtures, polished teak, antique furniture, fireplaces and walk-in closets. The spacious original cabins (Category B) include artifacts collected by the Huttons from their travels. These wood-paneled rooms feature various armchairs, marble fireplaces, and antique furnishings. The remaining cabins (Category 1-4 are a mix of converted original officers cabins and additions made in the modern era.

Papua New Guinea aboard True North

Inline images 1

2013 cabins selling fast, five-night sailings from just $7,995pp

Home to more than 600 islands and the largest area of rainforest outside the Amazon, Papua New Guinea is one of the world's last frontiers. Discovering the 'Land that Time Forgot' on-board a True North adventure-cruise is one of the very best ways to discover the wonders of this mysterious paradise.

Each year, during the months of October, November and December, the adventure-cruise ship True North offers several refined and uniquely different adventures to only the most pristine areas of West Papua and Papua New Guinea – featuring village life that has remained largely unchanged midst the ravages of the modern world and, some of the world's most remarkable scenery.

Time spent on-board ranges from five to twelve nights, however regardless of which itinerary is preferred – the end result is always days heavily laden with both cultural and natural history.

Australia's premier luxury adventure-cruise ship, the True North is purpose-built to sail deep into the heart of the wilderness, visiting untouched areas that larger ships cannot access. Guests are privy to only the highest quality experiences courtesy of True North's on-board naturalists and marine biologists, a ship's helicopter, six dedicated expedition boats and, a knowledgeable crew of 20 who tend to the every-need of just 36 guests.

Peter Trembath, GM at North Star Cruises says: "Both West Papua and Papua New Guinea are equally adventurous destinations but being on-board the True North allows for exploration in complete style! Every day is action packed – we use our own charter jet to fly our guests to the ship and from the minute they set foot on-board – the activities begin! Of course, guests need only involve themselves to their own preferred level of involvement and everything on-board is very relaxed – but the adventurous atmosphere is contagious and, most guests do try to cram in as much off-ship activity as they can. Getting to know the young Australian crew is also a treat – unlike the norm on bigger ships, our crew are encouraged to interact with the guests – they act more like chaperones than guides and this rather Aussie way of doing things is a big difference when comparing life on-board the True North – regardless of whether you are whizzing off into the sky on a heli-flight or heading off for a snorkel – our attentive crew members will be right by your side. And, after each adventure, guests return to the comfort and security of the True North."

And there is no shortage of raw material to work with - such is the diversity and natural richness of these lands - every shore-party encounters a new adventure; the underwater spectaculars of the Raja Ampats, the towering jungle volcanoes at Bagabag Island, the dawn display of the red bird of paradise at Gam Island or swimming with manta rays at Losai Island - guests are constantly mesmerised by vistas of emerald islands, impenetrable jungles and seemingly endless corals.

Exceptional food and wine are also at the heart of a True North experience. The ship's modern Australian cuisine is supplemented with locally sourced ingredients and complemented by an outstanding selection of Australian wines. Cabins are spacious and modern; there is a panoramic lower deck dining room, an alfresco bar and an observation lounge.

The True North repertoire in West Papua and Papua New Guinea offers life changing experiences for all - from the well-travelled aficionado, to the first-time cruiser eager to experience something different. Daily activities include scenic walks, fishing, snorkelling, diving, picnics, cultural events and spectacular flights in the ship's helicopter.  North Star is takings bookings now for adventure in the later part of this year:
